Witchery ~Making a Scrying Mirror
There are numerous methods of scrying and using a mirror is just one of them. Scrying can be as simple as looking into the reflective surface of a bowl of water or you could use a scrying mirror. A scrying mirror is a tool that can be used to aid in divination, lucid dreaming, contacting spirits and similar practices. The concept is the same as that of a crystal ball ... you gaze into the surface and interpret the visions, shapes and symbols that you see. Here is a very basic method for creating a simple scrying mirror. HOW TO MAKE A SCRYING MIRROR: 2. Cleanse the glass. The glass is first prepared by being cleansed with salt water to neutralize any and all energy. Carefully remove the glass from the frame. Place the glass in a large bowl, dish or tray (glass baking dishes are perfect for this) and sprinkle some salt on the glass. Pour freshly boiled water over the glass and let the water cool. 3. Prepare a herbal bath. Choose some herbs and spices that have qualities that you want to infuse into the glass. I have a blend of 13 herbs, roots and spices that I use to enhance psychic abilities and aid in communicating with the other world. Depending on what path you follow or what associations you make to different numbers you might choose to only use 5, or 7 herbs ... then again your blend may include more than 20! When the salt water has cooled drain the water. Place your herbal blend in the dish with the glass and pour boiling water over them. Let the magick energy contained within the herbs to penetrate the glass. You may choose to soak the glass for a few hours, overnight or as long as three days. 4. Preparation. When the water has cooled and you feel that the herbs have done their job remove the glass and dry it carefully. Use masking tape to seal the edges of the front of your glass. This prevents paint from sneaking to the wrong side of the glass and will give your mirror a professional finish. 5. Cleanse again! Make certain that the side of the glass without tape (the back side of your mirror) is spotlessly clean. A spec of dust will ruin your finish. 6. Paint the surface On the BACK side (the one without tape) of the mirror use black matte spaypaint in even strokes to cover the entire surface of the glass. You might have to go over the glass twice but don't go too crazy with the paint or you will get drips, smudges, spots or wrinkles. When you have completely covered the surface let the glass sit for several hours to ensure that the paint is absolutely dry. (**You could use any black paint to cover your glass but over the years we have found that a quality matte black spraypaint gives the best results.) 7. Final Cleansing When dried remove the tape and cleanse the surface one last time. Return the glass to the frame. 8. Mark the Mirror When I make mirrors I always leave this part for the new owner to complete. Choose your favourite method of "blessing" to consecrate your new mirror as the final stage of preparation. You may choose to bathe it in moonlight or ritually imbue it with magickal energy. Whatever you choose to do it is important to mark the mirror as your own, in your own way. INTERPRETATION
