I adore herbs. My garden is filled with plants and my shelves are filled with books about them. As I began to discover my path I began to write down the properties of some of my favourite herbs. The following pages are simply a few points I have jotted down over the years and is in no way a complete list.
DISCLAIMER: Please keep in mind that herbs can be harmful. Some herbs are especially dangerous because the toxin levels vary from plant to plant. Many can be extremely harmful to pregnant/nursing women, children, the elderly and those with medical conditions. Do not ingest or use any plant, flower, root, oil or seed that you are not completely certain of, or have limited knowledge of.
A
Acorn - fertility. May simply be carried as an amulet to enhance fertility powers.
Agrimony - powerful strengthener and healer, also used for cleansing, is believed to remove jinxes and hexes
Alder - It is used in dairy vessels and the branches in making whistles. It is associated with Bran, as He used His body as a bridge to span dangerous waters. It is used in the construction of bridges. Alder indicates protection and oracular powers.
Allspice - money and luck. May also be used in the making of fertility necklaces (as can almost all berries and seeds)
Almonds - noted in "The Faerie Queen" by Spencer, an emblem of true love. In ancient times a new mother after giving birth was fed almonds soaked in milk to improve her flow of milk.
Aloe - guards against negative and evil influences, in Egypt used as a religious symbol for protection and patience, used for protection and luck
Angelica - has "angelic" virtues, healing powers: Angelica was known as herba angelica (angelic herb) in medieval times, because it was believed to cure all ills, helps with visions, defends and comforts the heart (be warned a drink made from this may subdue passions), blood and spirits, is a symbol of Spring, make a drink with this to ensure a long life, can be sprinkled at the four corners of the home to ward off evil, added to baths removes curses, hexes, enchantment or any evil spells that have been cast against you. May be especially useful for protection of women an children.
Anise/Aniseed - used in spiced cakes (called mustaceusat) weddings and other Roman feasts to aid digestion, averts the evil eye, used in pillows to deter nightmares, used for protection and meditation, will help to drive off evil spirits, is said to be especially powerful when combined with bay leaves to purify, placed in a room will drive off evil, placed around the magick circle will protect the magician from evil spirits, can be used to call forth spirits to aid in magical workings. May also be used to enhance psychic powers
Apple - is great for love magick and is helpful aid for divination, is a symbol of the goddess and promotes health, wood is used to make magickal wands. the earliest cultivated tree. It is associated with choice. In Norse myth, Idunna was the keeper of the 'apples of immortality' which kept the Gods young. The 'fruit-bearing tree' referred to by Tacitus in his description of Norse runic divination may have been the apple. Apple indicates choice, and is useful for love and healing magic, five pointed star is evident when an apple is sliced to reveal its seeds. Is the tree that Adam and Eve ate from in the garden of Eden. If you have an apple tree be certain to leave at least one apple remaining on the tree for 'The Apple Man¹ to ensure a good harvest the following year.
Arrowroot - Dust on your hands for luck ... especially good for gambling
Ash - used by Druids to create their wands, because of its age is known as "The World Tree", use for healing and to add strength and purpose, helps to create a link to the inner and outer worlds, the first man was created from an ash log, was commonly used to make spears

Balm of Giliad - Comforts those who have lost in love, encourages the reconciliation of estranged lovers.
Basil - flight protection, used in ancient royal medicines and still associated with royalty, disinfects, protects the spirit, love: if a man should accepts a sprig from a woman he shall later fall in love with her, carry in your pocket for wealth, keep a basil plant to ensure a happy home ³no evil can dwell where there is basil², purification, protects the dead from evil as they travel to the next world and offers them entrance into paradise, Indians chose this herb to swear their oaths upon in court, was found growing around Christ's tomb after the resurrection, some Greek Orthodox Churches use it to prepare the holy water, and pots of Basil are sometimes set below Church altars, masculine plant which corresponds to the fire element, the planet Mars and the deities Vishnu and Erzulie, added to love incenses and sachets, and the fresh leaves can be rubbed against the skin as a kind of natural love perfume, can also be used in exorcism incenses and in purification baths
Bay - promotes vitality, a symbol of glory, reward, honor and greatness, purifies, good for strength and healing, aids psychic abilities, protects (especially against witchcraft, thunder and lightening) used by Delphine priestesses, a symbol of the newborn god and is a masculine herb, combine with anise for strong protection powers, is especially powerful when casting against someone else

Beebalm/Bergamot - related to mint, place in wallet to attract money, rub onto money before it is spent to ensure that it will be returned, use for success and wealth spells, used in success rituals and spells
Beech - nourishment, ancient knowledge (it's name means "book") use to gain insight and guidance as well as for protection
Belladonna - Also known as Deadly Nightshade. Magickally used to ease or rectify the current situation. Historically used by Italian women in eye drops to dilate the pupils thereby drawing attention to the eyes, making them more beautiful. Although related to the tomato plant this herb can be very dangerous
Betony - use with honey to refresh (especially for weary travelers) Egyptians thought hat it was magical for protection, it is said to keep a house happy
Birch - protection, shelter, fertility (especially for newlyweds) healing magic, children's cradles were made from its wood, associated with the Norse god Thor, criminals were at one time birched to drive out evil influences on them, nearly every part of it is edible
Blackberry - sacred to the goddess Brigid, prosperity, protection, money, wealth, healing, use leaves to repel evil spirits from your home or to return ill will sent to you.
Blackthorn - is a winter tree. The sloe, its fruits ripen and sweeten only after the nip of the frost. White flowers are seen even before the leaves in the spring. It is black barked with vicious thorns and grows in dense thickets. The wood is used in the cudgel shillelagh and Blasting Stick. Its thorns are used to pierce waxen images. Blackthorn indicates strong action of fate or outside influences that must be obeyed. It is bad luck to bring it into your home before Spring.
Bluebell - very dangerous and is also known as "dead mans bells" because if you hear them ringing you will have bad luck or even face death
Boldo - Said to repel and keep away evil spirits, bad customers, unruly people, and even diseases.
Boneset - was believed to be a "cure all" healing everything from the common cold to broken bones (hence the name)
Borage - "Borage gives me courage" said to strengthen, comfort the heart and spirit, make men merry and delighted, also believed to increase psychic powers, masculine plant which corresponds to the Air element and the planet Jupiter, place a flower in your button hole for protection when going outdoors, good for promoting a happy home
Broom - protects against the fae, is a sign of plenty and heraldry
C
Calamus - A root which was a common ingredient in Witches Flying Potions, also used for control and domination spells.
Calendula - protects, blessings, helps to see faeries and true love. In New Orleans style magick calendula may be used to win a favourable court decision. Stops evil from entering when strung over doorway, under bed it will protect the person sleeping over it, gives prophetic dreams (especially lucky number dreams), helps to win respect and admiration, strong sight and heart, masculine herb which corresponds to the Fire element and the Sun. It is also called Pot Marigold but quite different from the marigolds most commonly seen at garden centres.
Caraway - prevents theft, protects against all evil spirits and negativity, believed by some to be especially effective for protecting children, encourages fidelity and is used to keep a love, baked into cookies or bread it is believed to induce lust, chew on the seeds to gain the love of one that you desire, also strengthens memory and helps in studying, masculine plant which corresponds to the air element and the planet Mercury, any object which holds some caraway seeds is said to be theft-proof, seeds are sachets and talismans to attract a mate
Cardamom - use in love and lust spells believed especially effective if the intention is an extramarital affair.
Catnip - reduces stress, use in love sachets with rose petals, attracts good spirits and great luck, enhances beauty and happiness, courage and protection, a feminine plant which corresponds with the water element, the planet Venus and the deity Bast, can create a psychic bond between your cat and yourself
Cayenne - increases mental powers, helps with happiness, breaks bad spells, used in love spells this will ensure that the love is spicy
Celery Seed - use to enhance psychic powers and to bring prophetic dreams.
Chamomile - gambling, prosperity, money, wealth and luck, also used for sleep, healing and purification ... very gentile and may be good starting herb for a children¹s herb garden
Chervil - new life
Chestnut - nourishment and provokes lust, as with most nuts and seeds may be used for fertility magick
Chives - joy, happiness, love and positive emotions, holds some magical powers such as the ability to drive away evil
Cinnamon - fast money drawing, healing, increases magical and psychic powers, draws love and increase spirituality when placed under pillow . Fill a green or gold sachet with cinnamon to draw money and success or to use as a healing charm. A purple sachet can be used to increase your magickal and psychic powers. A red sachet placed under your pillow or bed will draw love and white sachet to increase you spirituality and for protection
Clary - for health and cleansing the eyes, vision
Clover - Used for love, for a prosperous marriage, may also be used for purification, Red Clover Tea is believed to greatly enhance fertility, finding a four leaf clover is considered very lucky and will keep you safe from the fae

Cloves - banishes evil, protects, will attract good luck
Coltsfoot - aid psychic visions or to remove sickness and mental problems especially when included in an incense
Comfrey - once known as Knitbone, because the leaves and roots were traditionally used in poultices to mend fractures, healing, protects (especially during travel), helps you to keep the money that you have, "comfrey is for comfort" soothes the spirit
Cornflower - named for the goddess Flora
Coriander - to gain knowledge, in Egypt used as a funeral offering, immortality, arouses passion and lust, is an aphrodisiac
Cowslip - loved and guarded but the fae, beauty, reality, unlock treasures
Cumin Seeds - believed to keep evil and bad luck away from your home, to keep your lover faithful.

Daffodil - cleansing, basis for the ancient ointment Narcissism
Daisy - daisy chains protect against the fae
Damina - Used to draw a new lover, to intensify sexual passion, or to bring back a straying lover.
Dandelion - strengthens, cleansing, as a tea will enhance 'Second sight¹ or psychic powers, use when everything seems to be going wrong
Devil's Shoe String - a root which may be used for protection from crossing and gossip, for gambling luck, for employment
Dill - protection when hung in doors or carried in a sachet, when added to a bath is said to make the bather irresistible, stimulates lust when eaten or smelled, charm against witchcraft, strengthens the mind sleep, known as "meetin' seed", because children were given Dill seed to chew on during long sermons, sniffing Dill is known to cure the hiccups
Dittany of Crete - Fed to the one you love to promote desire; burned to bring a vision of your future mate.
Dragon's Blood - is a resin which comes from a palm tree named so because when burned it looks like blood. It increases the power of other herbs and oils. Other uses for dragon's blood are: love, protection, exorcism, money and wealth

Elder/Elderberry - home of the Norse goddess Freya, dangerous to sleep under or to cut, any items made from this are bad luck especially cradles which will give the child no rest, this may also protect against evil and bring luck during wedding ceremonies, to stand under during MidSummer Nights Ever will allow you to see the King of the fae, gives strength, used as magical horses, the end in the beginning and the beginning in the end is represented in this tree, healing of the mind and spirit, Elder re grows damaged branches with ease, in general the tree is poisonous, in medieval times it was the abode of witches
Elm - the abode of the faeries, adds stability and grounding, cleansing and healing, often associated with Mother and Earth Goddesses, Kipling; "Ailim be the lady's tree; burn it not or cursed ye'll be".
Eucalyptus - To drive away pestiferous people and also for personal cleansing after contact with evil.
Eyebright - used as a memory tonic, strengthens the mind, clears the mind and eyes, adds joy and mirth
F
Fennel - healing, sight, protect against evil especially when bunches are hung over the door on Mid-Summer Night Eve. May also be used to keep the law away, to strengthen a women's courage, to prevent curses.
Fenugreek - healing, increases everything! Very good for money and wealth spells. Is excellent for increasing mothers milk.
Fern - Used to prevent jinxes, to remove evil spirits from the home, to help ward off burglars.
Feverfew - combating migraines, protects against illness and accidents, strength (especially for women), mild sedative and as a tonic to relieve muscles spasms, a masculine plant which corresponds with the water elements and the planet Venus. May be carried by accident prone people to prevent mishaps. Was considered a cure all in the past
Five Finger Grass - Also called Cinquefoil. Good for money or success spells. Will help you get/do anything five fingers can
Flax Seeds - Used to increase psychic abilities and mental powers, and for protection of children also will aid sleeping ... very good addition to dream pillows.
Foxglove - protects the home and garden, worn by the fae, gentle, cleansing, friendly (especially to nature), feminine plant which corresponds to the Water element and the planet Venus, very poisonous

Garlic - magical powers against evil, very strong as a protector, healing, and good health, used to seal an oath by the Egyptians, prevents competitors from getting ahead of you, can cause visions, strengthens (especially used by the Romans) Almost always one of the main ingredients in Four Thieves Vinegar
Gentian Root- A love-drawing herb; carried in a conjure bag with the name of the one you desire, will cure thrush
Ginger - money, power , success, attracts love, passion spells to heat up the relationship, also beneficial in success spells and to ensure the success of spells, masculine
Ginseng - beauty, ensures sexual potency, protects health, wisdom, long life, aphrodisiac, especially beneficial to men
Goldenrod- money success and healing, flowers are believed to point in the direction of wealth
Goldenseal - Used by those who seek wisdom, strength, and beauty, also better health.
Grains of Paradise - For good luck, protection of the house, to get a job, and to make wishes come true

Hawthorn - hope, marriage, love and fortune, wood from the Hawthorn provides the hottest fire known, leaves and blossoms are used to create a tea to aid with anxiety, appetite loss and poor circulation, in medieval Europe it was associated with witchcraft and considered to be unlucky, beautiful blossoms and such deadly-looking thorns, protection, love and marriage spells. Sprinkle berries around your home to keep your spouse faithful
Hazel - protection, gain, knowledge and wisdom, poetic wisdom, the Salmon of Knowledge is said to eat the 9 nuts of poetic wisdom dropped into its sacred pool from the hazel tree growing beside it. Each nut eaten by the salmon becomes a spot on its skin, commonly used for 'water-witching' the art of finding water with a forked stick
Heather - love
Holly - associated with the death and rebirth, defends, very holy plant, Gawain fought the Green Knight, who was armed with a holly club to represent winter, used in spear shafts the holly indicates directed balance and vigor to fight if the cause is just, may be used in spells having to do with sleep or rest, and to ease the passage of death. Use this plant to invite helpful spirits into the home.
Honeysuckle - useful as an infusion or syrup, for treating coughs, catarrh and asthma, diuretic and laxative properties and also contains salicylic acid, from which aspirin is produced, large doses can be cause vomiting. Honeysuckle is a masculine plant which corresponds to the Earth element and the planet Jupiter. Lightly crushed Honeysuckle flowers rubbed on the forehead heightens psychic powers. If a Honeysuckle plant grows outside near your home it will bring you good luck and fortune, heightens psychic powers, luck and fortune
Hops -cleansing, promotes sleep, healing In the first century AD in Spring, young shoots were sold on markets, to be eaten like asparagus. By the eighth century, the plant was used for its clearing, flavouring and preserving qualities. Hops is a masculine plant which corresponds to the air element and the planet Mars. A pillow stuffed with hops promotes restful sleep. Hops is also used in healing sachets and incenses.
Horse Radish - originally cultivated chiefly as a medicinal herb, but now it is considered a flavouring herb. Horse Radish has a sharp pungency that has a dramatic effect and has been known to clear sinuses in one breath.
Horehound - used especially by the Egyptians, healing, can break magic spells, also called "Seed of Horus", "Bulls Blood" and "Eye of Star" May be used for protection against wild animals. Commonly used to make lozenges/candies to sooth sore throats.
Hyssop - strong for cleansing especially cleansing sacred places, mentioned in the old testament for its purification properties and is widely used by herbalists to treat bronchial infections, name comes from the Hebrew word ,ezob, meaning holy herb, corresponds to the Fire element and the planet Jupiter, the most widely used purification herb in magick, hung in the home to purge it of evil and negativity, added to baths in sachets, infused and sprinkled on objects or persons to cleanse them

Iris - symbol of power, each of the three petals represents "Faith, wisdom and valour" Orris root comes from a particular iris which, when powdered, is used as a preservative/fixative.
Irish Moss - money, luck, protection, aids in psychic abilities, carry some with you or place some in your home to increase luck and to ensure a steady flow of money. Irish moss is sacred to the European sea gods and it aids psychic abilities
Ivy - sacred to Bacchus and Dionysus believed to prevent intoxication if bound to the brow or steeped in the wine, should be matched with wine, forms poets crowns and the wreath of Bacchus, fertility (especially for newlyweds) means "excellence" when seen on pub signs, brings luck, guards against negativity and disaster, fidelity, corresponds to the Water element, the planet Saturn and the deities Bacchus, Dionysus and Osiris, carried by a woman for good luck and is worn by brides for this same reason, used in fidelity and love charms, a feminine herb, poisonous herb is used today with skin problems

Juniper - "scarce paralleled" in its virtues, resistance and protection, strengthens the mind, health, spell casting, drives away evil spirits and disease, to increase virility in men, enhance sensuality in women, and to attract physical love

Lady's Mantle - love spells and wonder working, used medicinally for female complaints, a feminine plant which corresponds to the Water element and the planet Venus
Larch - smoke from this wood wards off evil spirits, induces visions and protects, shamans use larch wood to rim their ceremonial drums
Lavender - peace, happiness (especially within the home) promotes sleep, love, purification, protection, healing, flowers bring courage and strength, good for the mind, used by some as one of the ingredients in Vinegar of the the Four Thieves, the scent has been proven to be one of the only true aphrodisiacs
Lavender Cotton - protection, healing and sight (also called Santolina)
Lemon - preserves health and cleanses
Lemon Balm - sacred to the temple of Diana, used especially by the Greeks and Romans, Greeks called it "Hearts Delight", in Europe it was known as "Elixir of Life", you may find love when it is carried, heals, ensures success, uplifts the spirits, a masculine plant which corresponds with the water element and the Moon.
Lemon Grass - For protection and to increase the power of amulets; also for a good sexual time.
Lemon Verbena - make attractive to the opposite sex, used in love blends, purifies, It¹s scent may have a similar uplifting effect as Lemon Balm

Licorice - clears sight, profit, money, used in control magick such as in making ³essence of bend over² or ³command and control oil²
Lilac - mental and psychic powers, harmony and soothing, wards off evil spirits and brings protection, used to call upon good spirits
Lovage - grown in psychic gardens, may also be used for passion and romance spells

Mandrake - strong magical powers, brings prosperity, prevents misfortune, may be used to make poppets/dollies
Maple - success, abundance, strength
Marjoram - protection, happiness, health, the brain and mind. warming and comfortable, used to see future, gentile, marital bliss
Marigold (see calendula)
Marshmallow - protects from illness, will restore a failing love, cats out evil, protects against "Black" magic and illness, Marsh Mallows (powdered root thickened in water and heated with sugar to create a soothing sweet paste) were eaten by the Egyptians and Syrians, and mentioned by Pythagoras, Pluto and Virgil, feminine plant which corresponds with the water element and the Moon, gather a bouquet of mallow and place a vase outside your door or on a window sill if you have a failing love. This will cause them to think of you and after that they may return to you.
Mint - travel, used in rites, head and memory, symbol of hospitality, joy, strength, named after Minthe who was turned in to the plant when a god became jealous
Mistletoe - should never fall to the ground or it is considered a bad omen. used but the Druids, visions, wards off evil, fertility, love, powerful herb
Mugwort - named for Artemis protector of all virgins, increases psychic powers, aids in other world travel, strengthens, protects, aids in prophetic dreaming, cleans magical tools, especially good for women, aiding the menstrual cycle and menstrual problems, often used to clean magickal tools, is a feminine herb.
Mullein - were used as torches by witches, drives away evil, may be used for 'dark arts' purposes, dried and ground can be used as a substitute for grave dirt
Mustard - Black will rid you of troublesome people or disrupt their actions, white will give you strength and is a symbol of faith
Myrrh - spirituality spells, protection, healing, combined with frankincense to increase power, smoke will purify and bless, smoke from myrrh incense to purify and bless charms, amulets, talismans etc. Burn as an incense to purify an area, myrrh also aids spirituality and is a feminine herb
Myrtle - woven into bridal wreaths, displayed at Roman feasts and weddings, love, to keep a love alive and full of excitement, preserve youthfulness, money spells, feminine plant which corresponds with the water element, the planet Venus and the deities Venus, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hathor, Astarte, Ashtoreth and Marian, representing Venus and love, Myrtle is often woven into bridal wreaths, long been considered a love herb and a wreath or a crown of fresh leaves and flowers worn on the head is highly appropriate when performing love spells or rituals, grown on each side of the house will ensure love and peace reside within. Carrying a Myrtle wood will preserve your youthfulness and a cup of Myrtle tea, drunk every three days will do the same, but it must be drunk

Nettle - A strong jinx-breaker when used as a sprinkle or brewed and drunk as a tea.
Nutmeg - good luck, good health, financial of money spells, a whole nut my be carried as a good luck charm
O
Oak - strength, Norse, Celts, Zeus and Thor, protection, success and stability, inhabited by the Oakman, time, patience, wisdom, considered sacred by just about every culture that has encountered the tree, associated with Gods of thunder and lightening, habit of being hit by lightening during storms, different varieties will lend their own special 'flavour' to the magic, associated with the 'Wild Hunt'
Onion - protection, enthusiasm, energy, purification, Alexander the Great fed them to his troops before battle to give them strength
Oregano - To keep the law away; also used to keep troublesome in-laws away.
Orchid - used by witches to promote true love

Pansy - love potion of Oberon
Parsley - Hercules chose parsley for his garlands so the Greeks bestowed it on their winners, stamina, funeral rites, healing, sprang from the blood of the Greek hero Archemours, eat this to freshen your breath
Patchouli - Used in both love-drawing and money-drawing rites, and to break jinxes.
Peppermint - visions, sleep, purification, increase your psychic abilities, healing especially stomach aches, scent is said to ease headaches
Pine - old title was "the sweetest of woods, alleviates grief and guilt
Plantain - symbolic of the well trodden path, one of the nine sacred Saxon herbs, for the mind, will protect against snakes and thieves
Poplar - endure and conquer, also for speech and language, commonly referred to as the talking, whispering and quivering tree, associated with the rune berkano, Heracles wore a crown of poplar leaves when he retrieved Cerberus from Hades, and the upper surface of the leaves was thus darkened from Hades' smoky fumes. In Christian lore, the quaking poplar (aspen) was used to construct Christ's cross, and the leaves of the tree quiver when they remember this fact.
Pennyroyal - To keep peace in the home, end family troubles, and help solve marital problems.
Peony - To protect against misfortune, bolster health, break jinxes, and draw good fortune.
Pepper - To get rid of evil or to cast evil onto someone; to make someone move out of your way.
Poppy - Use the flowers to induce psychic dreams and visions while you sleep or to confuse someone for love. The seeds may be used for darker purposed of domination and confusion. Keep the seeds in the freezer as they will go rancid.

Rose - associated with Bacchus, when hung above a table it signifies silence and confidence, love, beauty, sleep, psychic and mental powers, protection, good health, courage, power, stress
Rice - prosperity and fertility
Rosemary - remembrance, protects against evil spirits, prevents bad dreams, friendship, love, luck, purification, healing, youth, sleep, mental powers, purifies both the inside and outside, strengthens happiness (may be used to substitute almost any herb)
Rowan - (also called Mountain Ash) aid and protection against enchantment. Sticks of the Rowan were used to carve Runes on. It was also used in the art of metal divining. Rowan spays and crosses were placed over cattle in pens and over homes for protection. Its red berries feed the birds in winter. The berries have a tiny pentagram on them. The pentagram is the ancient symbol of protection. The Rowan tree indicates protection and control of the senses from enchantment and beguiling.
Rue - once renowned as an antidote to poisons and infectious diseases, defense against spells, symbol of sorrow and repentance, herb of grace, wisdom, ingredient of the "Vinegar of the Four Thieves" cleans the head in love matters, improves mental health, breaks hexes, reputation for improving eyesight, Rue is a masculine plant which corresponds to the Fire element, the planet Mars and the deities Diana and Aradia, leaves placed on the forehead relieves headaches, worn around the neck aids in recuperation from illness and also wards off future health problems, sniffed it clears the head in love matters and also improves mental health. Rue added to baths breaks all hexes and curses that may have been cast against you. It is protective when hung up at a door or placed in sachets, and the fresh leaves rubbed on floorboards sends back any harmful spells sent against you. The Romans ate Rue as a preservative against the evil eye, and the plant was also carried to guard the bearer from poisons, werewolves and all manner of dangers. Rue is another plant said to grow best when stolen, and its presence in the garden beautifies and protects it, used in Italian luck charms

Saffron - Greeks gods, heroes and nymphs are said to have dressed in robes that were died with saffron, strengthens the heart, helps to achieve happiness, healing, may use to clean hands before rituals, used to induce clairvoyance. Saffron is masculine
