~ SCRYING ~
Scrying: To gaze into an object to still the conscious mind and to contact the psychic mind. A form of Divination.

Remember those 3D posters that were so popular some time ago? Funny, but no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't see the object that was supposed to be hidden in that jumbled mess. Scrying is a lot like looking at those posters - some people just can't seem to see what is there in front of them.

There are those that seem to have a natural ability to scry. Just as artistic ability comes naturally to some, so do other talents to others. As with any ability however, only practice and patience will improve and develop your raw skills. Taking them for granted and leaving them dormant may be just as difficult to reverse as starting with little or no natural ability.

Although I will explore some scrying techniques here, I encourage you to develop your own. You may find that a particular scrying object is more suited to you than another, that casting a circle or burning a specific incense makes the visions come more easily. The more comfortable you are and the more you work at developing your skills the better at scrying you will become. With all forms of divination, practice is the key.

Black mirrors becoming increasingly popular (Click here to learn how to make one!). They are simple to set up and use. There are many sources for scrying mirrors on the internet but there are plenty of other items readily available to you that you can employ for scrying. Perhaps the least expensive of these would be a black bowl filled with water, or a bowl of water that has been coloured black. Black is recommenced because it provides a reflective surface while minimizing the details that a plain mirror might make distracting.

Other easily attainable, inexpensive scrying materials include:
- a bowl of frozen water ~ use the melting ice to gaze into
- a puddle
- a pond
- a regular mirror
- glass
- your morning coffee/tea
- candle flame
- fire embers
- smoke
- your television after it has been turned off

Some more elaborate, luxurious items you might consider:
- crystal ball
- black glass (different from painted/treated glass)
- a bowl of black ink
- an antique silver mirror

SCRYING MIRROR TEQUNIQUE

Pre-Preparation
Before you begin, you may want to experiment with lighting and position. I suggest doing this before anything else because fidgeting for matches or arranging candles while you are trying to scry can be a bit distracting. You may find that you do not even need to use candles at all. Look at the surface of the mirror and try to discover what sort of reflection is most comfortable for you. Also, try to find a good position for the mirror where you do not have to slouch, stretch, or strain to gaze into it.

Preparation
For me, preparation depends on how much time is available. I would love to take a cleansing bath, relax, and ground myself, have a glass of wine or cup of tea, light some candles and incense, unfortunately my infant son usually has other ideas. In a pinch, I try to calm and relax myself as much as possible. I focus on what it is I am about to do and what my purpose is and then get straight to it.

You may want to think about including some of the following to your preparations: chanting or using a special magical word or mantra, casting a circle, making a call to the divinity of your choice, meditating, playing special music, cleansing your aura, smudging the space, cleansing the scrying surface, imbuing the mirror with the power of the moon light - the possibilities are limitless!

Scrying
In the area that your have prepared - lighting and mirror in position - relax and look into the mirror. Look past the surface and into the darkness. Let your eyes relax and loose focus. The more relaxed you are the easier this will be. You will find that initially you may keep drawing your eyes to the surface of the glass but with patience and practice, you will be able to loosen your physical gaze for longer periods allowing your psychic gaze to take over.

Eventually you may notice a mist or haze then shapes forming, your appearance may change in the black reflection, you might experience visions of all sorts. What you see is up for interpretation. There are many sites and books that can provide some insight into what shapes and symbols mean. I have found in divination that the symbolism of what is seen may hold unique meaning to the individual doing the gazing. Personal development of technique and interpretation will bring about far greater success than following strict guidelines. I have discovered that following your own heart and instincts are far more accurate. Keep a journal and write your experiences down - this will help you to keep track of your progress and will become your own divination dictionary after some time. It is much better to relate what you see to what you know or feel these are your visions after all.

You may feel drained or tired afterwards but you should always enjoy the experience. Do not ever be afraid or frightened by what you see. The important thing to remember is that you are in control, and that you can draw yourself back whenever you like. Even if you see the most ominous visions remember that the future is not set in stone and you are always free to choose a different path. If you are concerned about a vision, think of it as a warning sign sent to help you, not an inevitability.

It may take some effort to master but it will come with time. It is all a matter of developing your own technique. For some it comes quickly and others may take more time and effort. There are people who can spend hours in front of the mirror and others who can only stand short periods. Being comfortable and relaxed is the key and practice makes perfect.

Good Luck!
